Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Gent and its surroundings
Ghent is a city rich in culture and heritage, and the Campanile Ghent hotel is close to many of the sights and places to visit. Ghent city centre is completely pedestrianized, which makes it delightfully easy to get around, and as a port city, the Graslei harbour is a sight not to be missed. 7km from the hotel is St Bavo's cathedral, which dates from the 10th century and contains within it the famous Ghent Altarpiece which was painted by Van Eyck, and is considered to be one of the most important artworks in Belgium. The beautiful Gravensteen castle, 11km from the hotel, is well worth a visit- tourists will enjoy the moat and the battlements, and there is a museum inside the castle. Slightly further away is the Pairi Daiza zoo and botanical gardens. This is home to 4000 animals and big gardens full of beautiful flora and fauna, and there is a steam train to transport you around when it gets a bit tiring. This is a fantastic day out for all the family! For your culture fix, the Museum of Fine Art is only 3km from your Campanile Ghent hotel, and exhibits works by some of the most famous artists, such as Rubens and Bosch, as well as some superb Flemish paintings. Make sure you try the local culinary specialities, such as the'mastel' (a type of bagel) and the delicious praline chocolates that are made by local chocolatiers. Whatever you decide to do in Ghent, you'll be sure to have a fantastic time and a great stay at the Campanile Ghent hotel!
